Wedding Ceremony on Elephant Backs

A Ceremony of Love Along Surin’s Grand Cultural Heritage Path

Experience a one-of-a-kind journey into married life amid a procession of elephants and the enchanting charm of local culture.

Surin Province is not only known as the City of Elephants, but also as a center of valuable local traditions. One of the highlights that attracts both Thai and international visitors is the Wedding Ceremony on Elephant Backs, held each year amid the festive atmosphere of the Candle Procession and Almsgiving on Elephant Backs.

The Wedding Ceremony on Elephant Backs is a unique blend of the traditional wedding customs of the Kui (Kuay) people, an ethnic group in the lower Northeastern region of Thailand, and the deep-rooted beliefs and reverence for elephants, which have long been regarded as symbolic and cherished animals of the community.

A Beautiful Ceremony of Love atop a Noble and Revered Animal

In this ceremony, the bride and groom dress in beautiful traditional attire and sit atop magnificently decorated elephants. They proceed in a wedding procession accompanied by local musicians, dancers, and community members who join as witnesses, surrounded by the lively sounds of traditional music and joyful laughter filled with celebration.

A wedding on elephant backs is therefore not merely a marriage ceremony, but also a symbol of stability, strength, and good fortune. It is believed to bless the couple with happiness, longevity, and a life that grows together—just like the elephant’s steady and confident steps along the journey of life.

Those interested can contact local authorities in advance to request participation in the ceremony or to arrange a traditional wedding on elephant backs, such as the Surin Provincial Administrative Organization or the Elephant Study Center.

A wedding on elephant backs is not merely a celebration of love, but also a meaningful way to preserve and pass on valuable local culture—showing the world that true love can indeed begin atop an elephant.
